ProWorkflow is a pretty cool business that has created a leading edge SaaS project management and time tracking application (disclosure - Julian Stone, CEO of ProWorkflow is also a contributor to Diversity Blog). They seem to be operating a little bit “under the radar” not getting the exposure of other SaaS businesses but nonetheless running a successful and profitable operation.
ProWorkflow have just created a cool time tracking widget - the idea is that the widget sits on a users desktop, where they can choose whichever project or client they are working on/with at a certain time - the widget tracks the amount of time spent and automatically enters the data into ProWorkflow, allowing real time invoicing, time tracking and project management.
It’s a cross platform widget (Vista and Mac) but doesn’t work with XP (which is a shame and possible a bit of a barrier to its success) - but it’s an excellent example of a value add applet that saves time and effort and increases efficiency for its users.
It’s the sort of thing that one can imagine being really applicable to other SaaS busiensses, the thnkign goes that if a user can have information populated to the backend SaaS app without having to actually go into that app - efficiency and productivity are both increased. Good work PWF!
The folks over at ProWorkFlow sent me a message about the new version of their software just released. Version 6 has a bunch of changes which will be useful for project management peoples everywhere but one change that caught my eye (and will be some appeasement for the SaaS naysayers is described below;
Custom Reports Builder
We have finally released the Reports Builder. This is incredibly complex code able to handle any report you can throw at it. So you can simply select fields, filters and display orders.
I was stoked to see this - so many people tell me that their (misguided) view is that SaaS won’t work for them because they simply cannot customise reporting sufficiently. This tool from PWF shows that data from SaaS can be sliced and diced as well as from any other app - data, after all, is just that - data.
I just found this article about the size of the SaaS market in New Zealand. Have a quick read as it’s interesting Here’s the article (and the first paragraph)…
——————– Software-as-a-Service Ups Its Game in New Zealand “Market Expected to Experience 65% Growth in 2007 and Grow to NZ$64 Million by 2010″ - http://www.crm2day.com/news/crm/123334.php
“Springboard Research, a leading innovator in the IT Market Research industry, today announced the results of its latest research on the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) market in New Zealand. Increased vendor activity and the inherent appeal of SaaS have been responsible for the market growing 65% in 2007 to NZ$14 million. Together with Australia, New Zealand continued to be the most mature market in the region….”

NZ$14 million? That seems a bit on the low side. I would have thought it would have been higher - perhaps double. But 14 million? I’ve known of software co’s in NZ that have been successfully renting software in a SaaS model for years. I also can tell you that we (ProActive Software - www.proworkflow.com - Project Management Software) were never interviewed or asked about our earnings in any survey and that would have added a chunk to the numbers. We’re a dedicated SaaS company! One of the few truly global established SaaS players in NZ. I wonder how many other companies weren’t included in this research? There’s plenty of great SaaS co’s around Wellington as well…
The point of this post? Firstly, that there is an emerging Software as a Service industry in New Zealand, and secondly, whilst interesting numbers and from a seemingly reputable source, never trust a SWAG (Silly Wild Ass Guess)
