Robert Scoble has an interesting take on the on again/off again MS/Yahoo deal and how it relates to MS’s rumoured overtures to Facebook.
Scoble sees this as potentially the battle supreme between an open web and a closed web. Scoble sees that by purchasinf FB and locking up Yahoo search, Microsoft could lock Google out of massive proportions of online content.
Of course one has to wonder if Facebook can remain truly closed in the face of the huge pressure regarding openess and data portability – of all the players, Facebook may have sufficient momentum to do so.
New today that Yahoo is beginning a limited trial utilising Google adsense ads on Yahoo search, this after Microsoft gave Yahoo a three week deadline which Yahoo starkly rebuked.
It’s kind of an entertaining cat fight but I can’t help but think that both companies are suffering significant damage through all this posturing, damage that they can both little afford to suffer.
My advice – Steve (Ballmer-Microsoft) quit being such an arrogant know-it all. Jerry (Yang – Yahoo) quit being such a schmuck. Don’t make someone (in the form of uber expensive lawyers) come and hit you with the proverbial wooden spoon…
Oh and now Jerry has AOL all lined up to come and join his gang – you’re all naughty boys and need to learn to play together nicely!
